The Hambach open-pit mine is located between Jülich in the Düren district and Elsdorf in the Erft district, right in the heart of the Rhineland lignite mining area.

It began in 1978 near the district of Hambach in Niederzier and is currently about 370 meters deep. Beneath its 85-square-kilometer mining area, there are 2.5 billion tons of lignite, which are located as deep as 450 meters.
